Stefanie Yip, 10%
10% is an energy saving initiative that serves to reduce the drastic and rapidly occurring environmental changes in the world by saving 10% of KGV’s annual electricity bill. Started up in 2006, 10% has successfully saved over HK$500,000 so far. The money will be used to benefit the students and to further environmental projects. Not only has 10% fostered widespread interest and awareness of the environment within KGV, we have extended our influence to our local, and even international communities.
In order to create a brighter future and to help us attain and reach beyond our 10% goal, do your part to switch off unnecessary and unused lights, air-cons, computers and other energy-consuming devices.
Our vision is to reduce King George V School’s electricity bill by 10%, compared to our base line figure in 2006. We recognise the deteriorating environment caused by human factors and so we try to do our part in our student community for a better and greener future. We strive to share awareness and our passion of the environment to the wider student community.
The 10% energy saving initiative started in 2006 and through successful speeches and presentations in assemblies and posters around the school, students began to participate and interest picked up when they learned how much they had achieved each month. Teachers also contributed by promising to do all sorts of innovative things, such as dressing up in student uniform and attending student classes for an entire day. Before long, the words “ten percent” and phrases like “Turn the air-con off” became part of everyday vocabulary.
In 2006 and 2007, 10% has successfully helped KGV to save over HK$400,000, a truly significant amount. In 2007 alone, 10% has saved about 15% of the 2006 electricity bill. Along with government subsidies, 10% now had around 1 million dollars. 10% has achieved more than its initial objective.
So far, 10% has spent its money on student benefits and on furthering environmental objectives. It bought speakers for KGV senior school, solar film on senior school windows, wind turbines and a new turtle pond. Discussions continue on how to spend the rest of the money.
Between September 2008 and January 2009, 10% has saved slightly over 10% of KGV’s electricity, although we have experienced a large increase in energy consumption in September, 2008. We need to work harder to save more energy in order to excel beyond our achievements in 2007.
Now a plea for the environment, what we call our world. It is all we have. So be a hero; switch those lights off. Compete with your friends over who can switch the most monitors off! And help us save the world!
