John Ho, CLP Vegetable Management
CLP Vegetation Management – to implement a state-of-the-art tree management program in the transmission or distribution overhead line maintenance activity. The vegetation growing in the vicinity of the overhead lines will be assessed and pruned at an exact angle by professionally-trained tree climbers, using the best international arboricultural practices such as three-cut method, tree mastering, directional or selective, thinning or reduction pruning. The trees, after the pruning, can be kept away from the overhead line for a long time, at the same time it can grow stronger and better. CLP Vegetation Management CLP Power, being a vertically integrated electricity operator in Hong Kong, owns the overhead lines by which electricity is transmitted or distributed. Due to the geographical coverage of our service area in Hong Kong, our transmission overhead lines span across extensive rural areas. Sometimes, the lines have to penetrate places with thick vegetation and are subject to power disruption when tree branches interfere or fall on them. Furthermore, falling of tree branches could also be a hazard to the general public. We actively carry out Vegetation Management (VM) in these areas with the objectives of enhancing supply reliability, preserving the environment, and reducing tree hazards to the public.
The key activity of our VM in Hong Kong is tree pruning. We have established a professional CLP VM team to handle this delicate operation. Our well-trained tree climbers follow the best international arboricultural practices, examine the tree conditions carefully and apply a number of specialized techniques including professional rope climbing, three-cut method, live line tree pruning, selective or directional tree pruning and other tree mastering techniques in order to maintain the trees in good health after the pruning.
We established a database to capture the vegetation information along the overhead line network so that the vegetation problem can be managed in a more efficient manner. We also required our team to take professional arboricultural training and examination, such as the certified arborist and certified tree worker courses which are well recognized worldwide. Having the professional certification and field experience, our tree teams can perform the best vegetation management in Hong Kong, at the same time contributing to tree conservation.
