Jackie Green, Protection of Animals Lantau South (PALS)
In Lantau stray or feral dogs are producing too many litters and suffer from diseases. There is also mistreatment of animals by “owners” and “neighbours”. Building construction contractors use animals for security and then abandon them at the end of the project.
Since 2000 PALS has rescued and re-homed animals while educating people about how to care for them.
Progress
Locally in Hong Kong: PALS have prevented unwanted litters of cats and dogs and has seen people increasingly learning to care for animals. There have been fewer stray animals and abandoned litters, (puppies in boxes in rubbish bins, for example), and fewer sick animals.
Problems arise from the government and their apathy to animal-related issues. There is an unwillingness to change the law and bring the legislation/law into the 21st Century or to enforce the current laws effectively.
Additionally, the local society does not regard animals as part of the “family”.
Jackie is working for a better environment for animals and through laws and education to promote and protect animals. She wants to see animals in a culture where they are not exploited through ignorance. Society should cherish animals.
The moments that have kept her going are seeing the next animal coming into the clinic and fitting the right animal to the right home – overall seeing PALS make a difference.
