Gopi Gopalan, Hong Kong Business
Since 1982 Gopi Gopalan has run Hong Kong Business, a magazine that promotes business and shares stories of people behind business, covering finance, banking etc. He recognised the business opportunity of providing information in English on the businesses in the region.
Twenty years ago the issue of the environment was not of any consequence to Hong Kong business. Then with the opening of South China, issues of the Pearl River Delta growth began without regard to the environment. Concern was raised about issues like Hong Kong ’s water coming from that region, which affected business in Hong Kong.
The magazine informs readers of the state of play, the success of business and the impacts of business on the environment, particularly from manufacturing.
Progress
Locally in Hong Kong: There is an increased awareness of the dangers of being lax in business. The magazine has shared new insights so businesses, as well as policymakers, can be made more aware of the issues.
Nationally in China: The magazine is a medium for awareness here too.
Internationally: The magazine provides overseas companies with a window to the Hong Kong business world.
“Even if it is a costly exercise I would like to see the campaign for clean air and environmental protection in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region to be successful.”
