Bruce Derrick, Organic Education
Bruce Derrick is an Organic Agriculturist, a mechanical engineer and a serious organic chemist. For the past thirty plus years he has been a consultant in the above referred to disciplines.
Living in Asia, based in Hong Kong his services have been employed by governments, banks, corporations and various foundations throughout Asia.
The biggest project was 14,000 hectares and included aircraft in the equipment inventory and more than 1,000 personnel.
Throughout the entire period he has devised, supervised, implemented and trained for more than thirty projects. The ultimate objective is a farm of the future, utilising all of the intellectual property rights he has acquired.
He would like to bring together a team of architects, engineers, horticulturists to make this “farm of the future” a reality.
Bruce has been involved in a myriad of engineering and agriculture based projects.
During a three and a half year project in China, Bruce developed a huge plantation growing organic dragon fruit employing 400 people.
His specialist knowledge is in fertilisers and organic chemistry. Bruce developed a D.I.Y. kit for growing vegetable sprouts and a self-contained miniature greenhouse that can be used on roof gardens, balconies etc. He does school visits to encourage children to grow their own vegetable.
A major achievement in Hong Kong, was setting up an organic farm for handicapped children in Pine Hill Village, the New Territories, where he developed a special set of tools for the children to use on the farm.
The Hong Kong Pine Hill Village project, is being followed by a farm growing organic vegetables in Macau, from which funding is derived directly from the casinos.
Bruce has also developed very good organic fertiliser from human excrement, which is now being exported to France, designed special tunnels, which grow high yielding organic mushrooms and developed bio digesters where two pigs supply enough pooh to supply a small farm.
It is Bruce’s goal to empower local people to grow their own food safely. He teaches this on his farms in the New Territories, does TV and radio shows to educate public in organics.
He is particularly inspired by seeing the children (particularly disabled children) planting trees and growing vegetables and he would like to establish an Organic Education Foundation, which is hands on for young people.
